Frontside 180
aka FS 180
A half rotation spinning frontside so you can spot the landing, then ride away switch. Wind the upper body, release into the pop, and stomp it backward.
The Breakdown
Four phases from roll-up to roll-away. Scrub the analyzer above — each phase lights up as the board hits it.
- 01 Approach
Ride in centered
Approach on a mellow flat or small roller at controlled speed, base-flat and balanced over both bindings. Keep your knees soft and your weight centered. Pick the spot where you will pop and commit to it.
- 02 Wind Up
Coil the upper body
Counter-rotate your shoulders and arms slightly against the spin to wind up like a spring. Lead with your toe edge so you can keep eyes on the landing the whole way around. Load the tail at the same time so the pop and the wind release together.
- 03 Pop & Spin
Release frontside
Pop off the tail and unwind your shoulders frontside, letting the upper body lead the board around. Keep the rotation flat and stacked over the board, not thrown out sideways. Look over your leading shoulder toward where you will land.
- 04 Switch Landing
Stomp it switch
Spot the landing as the board comes around to switch and reach your feet back to the snow. Land base-flat over both bindings with bent knees and your weight centered. Ride away switch without letting either edge catch.
When It Goes Wrong
The most common ways Frontside 180 bails — and the fix. Diagnose your slam, then get back on.
How do I keep from over-rotating my frontside 180?
You are throwing your shoulders instead of unwinding them in a controlled release. Wind up only as much as you need, then let the upper body lead the board calmly around to switch. Spotting your landing early naturally stops the rotation at 180.
I catch my toe edge when I land switch.
You are landing edge-first instead of base-flat. Reach both feet to the snow at the same time and land flat over both bindings with even weight. Keep your knees bent and your shoulders square to the fall line as you ride away switch.
My frontside 180 only rotates about 90 degrees and stalls.
You are not committing the upper body or not popping enough. Coil your shoulders against the spin first, then unwind hard off a well-loaded tail. Keep looking around toward the landing — your body follows your eyes the rest of the way.
Why does frontside feel scarier than backside for me?
Frontside leads with your toe edge so you can actually see the landing, which feels exposed at first but is your advantage. Trust that sightline and keep your eyes on the snow the whole rotation. Start on flat ground at low speed until the spin feels automatic.
The frontside 180 is your first real spin and the gateway to riding switch with confidence. Spinning frontside means your toe edge leads and you can see the landing the entire way around — a huge advantage once you trust it. Wind up the shoulders, release into a clean pop, and let your eyes pull you to switch.
Lock this on flat ground at slow speed before taking it to a roller or small kicker. Once your frontside 180 is automatic in both the pop and the switch landing, the frontside 360 is just the same motion with a fuller commitment.

True-twin park board
Soft to medium flex · true twin
A twin shape rides away switch exactly like it rides regular, which is essential since every 180 lands you backward. A softer flex makes the tail easy to load and pop into the spin.

Roughly +15 / -15 angles
Mirrored duck angles let you land and ride switch as comfortably as forward. Symmetrical stance keeps your weight centered through the rotation instead of pulling you off-axis.

Balanced response both directions
Mid-flex bindings give you control landing switch without feeling harsh. Even response on both feet helps you stomp base-flat instead of catching an edge on the backward landing.
